Part-time MD Youth Leadership Forum Coordinator

Independence Now, a Center for Independent Living, is a nonprofit organization created by and for people with disabilities. Our mission is: We advocate and embody independence and equality for all people with disabilities. We do this by providing support, guidance, training, education and hands-on-skills for the disability community in Montgomery County and Prince George's County, Maryland. Our vision is that people with disabilities live independent and fully inclusive lives and are recognized by society as equal. We believe that people with disabilities serve as the best guide for other people with disabilities by empowering individual choice and self direction.

Independence Now offers leadership opportunities to youth with disabilities through a statewide leadership program called the Maryland Youth Leadership Forum (YLF). YLF is a program for youth with disabilities who are juniors and seniors in high school. The YLF follows a national curriculum focused on: The Principles of Leadership, The Experience of Disability, Technology and Resources to Reach My Goals, Living on my Own and Reaching My Career Goals, and Leading in My Community. The YLF hosts a competitive application process to select 30 students from across the state to participate in the Forum. The selected participants attend a three-day and two-night event on the campus of a four-year College.

The YLF Coordinator is responsible for Independence Now's Youth Program which includes the YLF, several YLF alumni events and any other social events that might arise. The position will handle all arrangements for these events as well as staffing and supporting the Steering Committee of the YLF.

Requirements:

  • understanding of the history and commitment to the philosophy of Independent Living;
  • the ability to communicate effectively with youth with diverse disabilities;
  • develop creative ideas to engage, excite and empower youth;
  • ability to be extremely organized and efficient;
  • experience in planning events;
  • knowledgeable of the youth and disability networks;
  • exceptional attention to details and schedules;
  • capability of independently supporting group activities for youth;
  • ability to stay positive and focused during hectic days;
  • basic computer skills, knowledge of social media and website development;
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills.

At least one year of experience in event or program management, along with life experience with disability issues or youth is required. FBI Fingerprint background check required.

Position details:  20 hours per week. Salary depending on experience.  Minorities and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
